Traditional Whites

For a long time white was the only color that nurses were able to wear. Things have definitely changed since then, but some people still consider white as the most professional color. The idea behind the color white, was the thought that it provided a more clean and sterile look and could be bleached to easily disinfect. The color white was also an easy way to identify the nursing staff. Some also seem to believe that white represents newness and comfort for individuals who are ill. This same argument, that a patients day could be brighten from colored scrubs has been used as well. However, there are some negatives that were expressed regarding white scrubs.
The main negative was simply the impracticality that the color white would provide. We are well aware that with everything nurse's deal with, it's very difficult not to get soiled from time to time. With white scrubs those stains are much harder to hide. Another issue expressed with the white scrub, was the idea that it was a little to harsh on the eyes for some. Another negative expressed is this idea that white scrubs are not nearly as fashionable as their colored counterparts. Often times we think that just because you wear white scrubs you can't show individuality, which couldn't be further from the truth. At one time there was only the classic v-neck white scrub top, but overtime that has changed. There are a number of different style tops that are available to pick and choose from. With mock wrap, tunics and empire waists to tie backs and contoured looks, you can still be stylish in what some consider a boring or mundane color.
Whether you're wearing white scrubs or any other color, your main focus as a nurse is to consistently work to improve yourself in your craft. Taking care of your patients with the best care possible is what's most important. Providing a professional and clean environment is an important part of the medical profession, which means that you should always look and feel your best. Times have changed and a lot of hospitals have become more lenient when establishing required uniforms. The evolution of the nursing scrubs have allowed for many nurses to wear colors other than white, although some nurses still prefer to wear white. Whether it's the whites or color scrubs, what you wear should provide comfort and function as you navigate through your hectic schedule.
